The Boutique Charleston Wedding Registry FAQ (Plus Our Favorite Pieces to Add First)

Planning your wedding is full of meaningful decisions. Your registry should be one of the most enjoyable.

For nearly 70 years, The Boutique has helped couples create wedding registries that feel personal, timeless, and built for real life, from everyday table settings to those finishing touches that make hosting feel special. Whether you are drawn to fine china, crystal, linens, or heirloom-worthy accents, our registry experience is designed to guide you every step of the way.

Because many of the same thoughtful questions come up again and again, we’ve created this guide using our Registry FAQ as a foundation. Along the way, we’re sharing a few favorite recommendations from Carol, our registry expert, to help you start with confidence and build a registry that truly reflects you.

When is the best time to register?

Ideally, you want to be on the registry early, around the time your save the dates go out. Guests really do begin looking at gifts once the wedding date is on the calendar, and it is never “too early” to start building a thoughtful foundation for your home.

Should I make an appointment, or can I just pop by?

You’re always welcome to pop in, but appointments are strongly encouraged. Setting aside dedicated time allows our registry team to fully support you and make the experience feel relaxed, thoughtful, and enjoyable from start to finish.

The Boutique’s bridal registry is also appointment-based by design, helping keep each visit calm, focused, and fun!

Who should I bring with me?

For the best experience, we suggest keeping your registry visit to a small group, you and your partner, or one or two trusted guests. This allows the process to stay relaxed and cohesive. Feel free to take photos during your visit and share the fun later with family and friends.

Can I get registered in one visit, or do I need to come in more than once?

Most registrants take about an hour to complete their registry. If you are local and prefer to browse first and return with decisions, that works beautifully too. The team loves seeing brides throughout the process, so you can visit again as you refine things.

When you book a bridal appointment, you will get a tour, a peek at new arrivals, and guidance on popular bridal staples. And of course, one of The Boutique’s favorite traditions is snapping a photo with Ivy, the shop pup, a sweet way to announce that your registry is ready for guests.

Can I register online?

Yes, you can absolutely register online. But if you can come in person, we truly love meeting you and welcoming you into our family of brides!

Not local? No problem! We’re happy to assist remotely as well, offering video calls from the store and sharing images to help you make thoughtful selections from wherever you are.

What if I change my mind after I register?

It is completely fine. In fact, it is common. The Boutique notes that most gifts end up in gift card or store credit form, which means after the wedding, you can use your credit on what you truly want when you are ready to place your final order.

That flexibility is a big part of why a Boutique registry feels so easy. You can build the dream list now, then settle into the practical choices later when you know what you need.

I registered for china, then I inherited some. Now what?

This happens more often than you think. Our answer is simple: use your credit toward other things. Bedding, towels for every bath, home decor, and so much more can round out your home in a meaningful way.

What if someone really wants to get an actual gift, not credit?

We are happy to accommodate those requests. Often, these gifts come from close family and friends who truly want to give something special. We can also check with you first, so you feel confident about what is being purchased.

This is where it helps to have a few “hero” pieces on your registry that feel giftable, memorable, and celebratory.

A few hero favorites:

How long do I have to place my final order?

You have one year from your wedding date to redeem your store credit. Gifts can arrive after the wedding, so we recommend waiting about a month before making your final selections.

If you love having a plan in place, scheduling your “settle up” appointment in advance is always a great option.

Should I make an appointment to “settle up”?

Yes. We recommend an appointment for something this important, and if you cannot come in person, we are happy to accommodate orders by phone or email.

How do I make sure I only get the items I want?

We use a detailed ordering system to keep everything organized and intentional. You tell the team what you would like, then they follow up with a detailed estimate for your review, including pricing, any overages, and remaining credit amounts with each order. The goal is simple: you only receive what you want.

The Boutique Tips

If you want a registry that feels elevated but still completely you, Carol is exactly who you want in your corner. She is our registry expert, and works closely with brides to make the process feel thoughtful and personal. We’ve been offering registry services for nearly 70 years and have registered over 700 brides, so you can feel confident you are in good hands!

Start with your “first layer”

When you are just getting started, I love beginning with pieces that work for everyday life and also photograph beautifully for all the special occasions. Think: a set of placemats and napkins, a classic flatware pattern, a few gorgeous goblets, and one statement serving piece.

A few “first layer” favorites:

Carol’s gentle encouragement: mix and match

Carol loves to remind brides: it is your party, you can do whatever you want. If you want traditional china and modern flatware, go for it. If you want heirloom patterns mixed with crisp linens, do it. A registry should reflect your life, not a rulebook.

A few mixable favorites to consider:

Carol’s “starter list” favorites (by category)

If you want a helpful shortcut, here are some beloved registry categories and a few specific pieces Carol returns to again and again.

Crystal and barware you will reach for constantly

China patterns that feel personal

Herend is a Boutique favorite for a reason. These patterns are distinctive, giftable, and stunning mixed together when you want a collected look.

If classic French porcelain is on your wish list, Bernardaud will soon be available at The Boutique and is a beautiful foundational option to keep in mind.

Linens that instantly elevate the table

When in doubt, register for linens. They’re practical, timeless, and one of the easiest ways to elevate everyday dining.

Flatware that works with everything

Flatware is one of those “you’ll thank yourself later” registry categories. Both of these options are classic in their own ways.

Final word

To us, a registry is more than a list of things. It’s the beginning of a home you’ll build together, one piece at a time. Start early, keep it personal, and remember Carol’s favorite reminder: it’s your party, and you can do whatever you want.

If you’d like a little guidance along the way, we would truly love to help. Make an appointment, bring someone you trust, and let us take care of the rest. We can’t wait to welcome you and be part of such a special season.
